WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - This time No. 2 Virginia was ready for Wake Forest.
After the Demon Deacons' upset bid came up one point short in Charlottesville two weeks ago, the Cavaliers made sure that they wouldn't get a second chance, building an early double digit lead en route to a 70-34 win on Wednesday night at the LJVM Coliseum.
Virginia's defense set the tone early, holding the Demon Deacons to only seven points through the first 11 minutes of the game. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers went to work on offense, finding easy buckets in the paint and connecting from behind the 3-point line to jump out to a double-digit lead. When the halftime buzzer sounded Virginia held a 36-15 lead.
Things didn't get any better for the Demon Deacons in the second half as the Cavaliers continued to expand the lead on the way to their ACC-leading 14th conference win.
Freshman Konstantinos Mitoglou led the Demon Deacons with 10 points and six rebounds, while also adding three assists. Virginia's Anthony Gill led a balanced Cavalier scoring effort with 11 points - one of seven Hoos to score at least seven points.
Wake Forest will close out its home slate on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. against Pittsburgh. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can also be heard on the Wake Forest IMG Sports Network.
On the Way to 1,000
Junior Devin Thomas scored two points in 16 minutes of action to push his career total to 998 points and will look to become the 51st Wake Forest player to reach the 1,000-point threshold on Sunday against Pittsburgh.
Thomas and Codi Miller-McIntyre would be the first Wake Forest classmates to both reach 1,000 points by their junior seasons since Justin Gray and Eric Williams (2003-06).
Miller-McIntyre scored his 1,000th point on Feb. 11 against Miami and was awarded with an honorary game ball celebrating the achievement before tonight's game.
