
No. 15 Duke tops Wake Forest 70-53

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 15 Duke handed Wake Forest a 70-53 loss on Thursday at LJVM Coliseum. Senior Dearica Hamby recorded her 14th double-double of the season in the game.
Hamby led the Demon Deacons with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season. Mykia Jones scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Kelila Atkinson added seven points and four assists.
Duke (17-6, 8-2 ACC) held Wake Forest (10-14, 1-9 ACC) scoreless for over six minutes of play and opened up a 24-15 lead. Hamby ended the drought with back-to-back layups. Wake Forest trailed 27-19 with 3:32 remaining. Hamby and Atkinson accounted for all of Wake Forest's points at the final media timeout of the half.
Ataijah Taylor connected on a shot from beyond the arc to bring Wake Forest within seven, 29-22, with 2:55 left in the first half. Duke closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 37-24 lead in to the break.
After taking an elbow to the mouth that chipped part of her tooth, Jones came back in the game and drained back-to-back three-pointers to cut Duke's lead to 51-41 with 9:28 remaining in the game. It was as close as the Demon Deacons would get as Duke went on a 7-0 run and pushed the lead back to 58-41.
A three-pointer by Millesa Calicott was the final basket of the night as Duke won the game 70-53.
NOTES:
Dearica Hamby and Kelila Atkinson combined for Wake Forest's first 19 points of the game.
Dearica Hamby turned in her 14th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Mykia Jones scored all nine of her points after returning to the game with a mouthguard due to an elbow to the face. She went 3-of-5 from three-point range in the second half.
UP NEXT:
Wake Forest travels to NC State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
NC State leads the series 65-13 and has won the last four meetings including a 78-70 contest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Jan. 18.
NC State has a 35-3 lead in games played in Raleigh, N.C.
Wake Forest last beat NC State, 69-56, on Jan. 6, 2013 at the LJVM Coliseum.
