RALEIGH - Unable to dig out of an early hole, the 12th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped its second match in a row Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 loss to No. 38 NC State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Demon Deacons to 13-6 on the year and 3-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play while the Wolfpack improved to 11-8 and 1-5 in conference play. NC State snapped a five-match losing streak with the victory. Due to cold, windy conditions in Raleigh, the match was moved indoors prior to the start of play.
Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim helped the Demon Deacons jump out of the gate quickly with an 8-4 win on doubles court No. 1, but the Wolfpack responded with an 8-4 win on court No. 3 and clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory on No. 2.
NC State carried the momentum from taking the doubles point into singles as Beck Bond topped Mansouri 6-1, 6-3 on No. 4 to put the Wolfpack up 2-0.
Noah Rubin, the 27th-ranked player in the nation, cut the NC State lead in half and earned the first Wake Forest point of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 60 Robbie Mudge at No. 1 singles. Though it looked as if the Deacs would continue the comeback, two three-set victories on court Nos. 2 and 3 clinched the win for the Wolfpack. In those three-set contest, No. 8 Romain Bogaerts fell 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 on No. 2 while No. 80 Jon Ho lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 on No. 3.
Though the match had already been clinched, Seraphim and Maksim Kan each pulled out hard-fought wins on Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Seraphim earned a 7-6, 6-7 1-0 (4) win over Nick Horton and Kan took a 7-6, 6-2 win over Thomas Weigel.
Wake Forest returns to action next Friday, April 3, when it continues its four-match roadtrip in Atlanta against Georgia Tech at 5 p.m.
