CHARLESTON, S.C. - Wake Forest is in eighth after the opening round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay. Sophomore Danny Guise and freshman Will Zalatoris are in the top 15.
The Demon Deacons posted a 1-under 287 in the opening round behind under par rounds from Guise and Zalatoris. There are just 10 strokes separating the top eight teams in the standings. Missouri holds the lead at 11-under.
"It was cold and windy day on the course," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We stumbled late in the day and other teams finished strong. As a group we didn't play the par 5 holes well and it is a goal for tomorrow to play those much better. We are a good round away from getting right back in the tournament. We are first out tomorrow so the greens will be good and we will come out ready to go."
Sophomore Danny Guise continued his strong play at the event. Last year he finished eighth at 3-under par at The Hootie. After one round he is tied for 12th with a 2-under 70. Guise posted three birdies on the day and is just three strokes back of the leaders.
Zalatoris is just one stroke behind Guise with a 1-under 71. He continued his steady play this season with two birdies and 15 pars in the opening round.
Davis Womble and Woody Woodward carded match 1-over 73 on Sunday and Paul McBride rounded out the Demon Deacon scores with a 3-over 75.
Wake Forest will tee off the first hole beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday. The Demon Deacons are paired with Virginia and GRU Augusta for the second round.
