PITTSBURGH - Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead, but Pitt outscored the Demon Deacons 8-1 the rest of the way to win, 8-3, at Cost Field on Friday night.
The Deacons (21-15, 8-8 ACC) opened the game with three straight hits, including an RBI double from Nate Mondou, and Justin Yurchak added an RBI groundout to put Wake Forest ahead 2-0.
Pitt (13-19, 5-11 ACC) starting pitcher T.J. Zeuch settled in to throw a complete game, the first of his career and the first an opponent has thrown against Wake Forest this season.
After the three hits to open the game, Wake Forest's 1-6 hitters were held hitless, 0-for-22.
Drew Freedman paced Wake Forest with another three-hit game, also knocking in a run which tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth. Joey Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double, marking his fifth straight two-hit game.
Free bases again doomed the Deacons, as Wake Forest walked nine Panthers, hit another, and committed a pair of errors.
Nick Yarnall led Pitt offensively as he reached base in all four plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and two walks.
Zeuch improved to 3-4 with the victory, while Matt Pirro (6-2) suffered the loss for Wake Forest after allowing five runs - four earned - in 5.0 innings.
John McCarren tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief for Wake Forest.
The Deacons and Panthers will compete in game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPN3.
