
Wake Forest Falls to No. 23 Duke 5-2

DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the 23rd-ranked Duke Blue Devils in the season finale on Friday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Demon Deacons finish the regular season with a 14-12 mark overall and a 4-10 record in conference play. Duke improves to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in Atlantic Coast conference action. The loss snaps a two-match winning streak for the Demon Deacons.
Though the match was already clinched by the Blue Devils, Courtney Meredith and Karen Forman battled hard at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively and each picked up points for the Deacs. Meredith made it 4-1 with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Alyssa Smith. At No. 5, Forman earned a tight 7-6, 7-6 win over Annie Mulholland.
Duke got off to a hot start to open the afternoon in taking the doubles point with 8-2 victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Though the match was abandoned, Kimmy Guerin and Kasey Gardiner, the 76th-ranked pairing, were up 7-4 before play was called.
Moving to singles, Duke kept the pressure on as Samantha Asch fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 against No. 37 Ester Goldfield and Luisa Fernandez lost her match on No. 3 by the score of 6-0, 6-4.
Duke clinched the match with back-to-back wins at Nos. 1 and 4 as both No. 123 Guerin and Gardiner fell 6-4, 6-2 to give Duke a 5-0 lead.
Next time out, Wake Forest will be the No. 11 seed in the ACC Championships. Though the Demon Deacons have concluded their regular season, Wake will have to wait to find out its opponent in the tournament, as action throughout the rest of the conference will not conclude until Sunday afternoon.
In the ACC Championships, first serve for Wake Forest's first-round matchup is set for noon on Wednesday, April 22, in Cary, North Carolina at Cary Tennis Park.The Deacs have already eclipsed their 2014 win total both overall and in conference play and will look to improve those marks next week in the ACC Championships.
