GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Allison Emrey fired a 3-under 69 and sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate. Wake Forest is in second place at its home tournament.
Emrey recovered from two bogeys to start the day to fire a 3-under 69 and leads the tournament through 18 holes. She had five birdies the rest of the day, including a birdie on par-5 15 to move in to the lead. She is one stroke ahead of Virginia's Briana Mao and Florida's Karolina Vickova.
As a team, Wake Forest battled the windy condition to sit in second place at the end of the opening round. Wake Forest and Auburn, paired together, traded the lead for much of the back nine. Both teams picked up a few strokes late in the afternoon allowing Virginia, already in the clubhouse, to take first place with a 9-over 297. The Demon Deacons are one stroke behind UVa at 10-over and Auburn is right behind at 11-over. The Demon Deacons combined for 12 birdies, the second most of any team, behind Virginia's 13.
"I think the team played particularly well in the conditions today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "It was hard to keep the ball on the green on the back nine because the wind was blowing so hard. I think they held it together, played tough and did what they could do to make every shot. They didn't panic and played really well. Allison did just about everything well today. She was 2-over after two holes and made five birdies coming in. She had a plan for the way she wanted to play the course and she stuck with it and it paid off for her."
Sierra Sims is tied for fourth place after an opening round even-par 72. She countered four bogeys with four birdies to come out even at the end of the round. She is tied for fourth with Sarah Harris of Kentucky and Kelli Murphy of Auburn.
Marissa Dodd struggled with the conditions with bogeys on four of the final five holes. The senior finished the day at 6-over and tied for 38th. It was also a tough back nine for freshman Erica Herr. She was 2-over at the turn and finished the day with a 7-over 79. Freshman Vinh-Hop Ngo rounded out the team scores with an 84.
Mariana Sims competed as an individual and finished the day tied for 48th with a 7-over 79.
Wake Forest will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday. The Demon Deacons will be paired with Virginia and Auburn.
