SKILLMAN, N.J. – Romain Bogaerts, a rising senior on the Wake Forest men's tennis team, has been selected to participate in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Masters in September.
The 2015-16 season marks the first year the tournament will be held. It is the first national collegiate championship of the 2015-16 campaign. The tournament, held in Malibu, California, at the Malibu Racquet Club from Sept. 18-20, hosts 16 of the nation's best men's and women's singles players and eight of the top men's and women's doubles duos.
Of the 16-player singles field, 14 of the athletes have been selected with the final two positions coming as wild card selections. The final selections will be made closer to the tournament. The winner of the singles title will earn an automatic berth into the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship.
Of the 14 players selected thus far, seven of them are members of ACC programs. Joining Bogaerts in Malibu will be Ryan Shane and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia, Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame, Nicholas Alvarez of Duke and Brayden Schnur and Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina.
Bogaerts finished the 2014-15 season with a 26-9 singles record, including a 21-5 mark in dual competition, which helped him earn First Team All-ACC honors and ITA All-American honors. The 26 wins were good enough to put him in a tie for third-most on the team with Noah Rubin, who has since turned pro. With a strong showing in the classroom to go with his on-court performance, Bogaerts was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team last week with rising sophomore Skander Mansouri.
