WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest volleyball has announced the addition of Amber Miehlke to the coaching staff as the volunteer assistant coach, the program announced Thursday.
Miehlke comes to Wake Forest after a one-year stint as the volunteer assistant coach at Oakland University during the 2014 season. She spent four years playing for the Golden Grizzlies from 2009-12 before joining the coaching staff last season.
"I am excited about Amber joining our staff," Wake Forest head coach Ken Murczek said. "She brings a great skill set both as a successful former Division I student-athlete and as a coach. Since graduating from college she has spent time with both the club and college ranks. I look forward to Amber making an immediate impact on our program."
During the 2014 season, Miehlke helped guide the team to a 22-10 overall record with a 12-2 mark in Horizon League action. With the program joining Division I ranks prior to the 2013 season, Miehlke helped guide the Golden Grizzlies to a lot of firsts, including the program's first 20-plus win season in Division I, Horizon League regular season and tournament titles and the team's first NCAA Championship appearance.
During the season, Miehlke helped Oakland to a 10-match winning streak. The run included the final eight matches of the regular season and two matches in the Horizon League Championship, which saw the Golden Grizzlies beat No. 4-seed Youngstown State in the semifinals and No. 2-seed Milwaukee in the finals. In the NCAA Championship, Oakland put up a tough fight in falling to Kentucky by the score of 25-20, 28-26, 25-19.
In her four years playing for the Golden Grizzlies, Miehlke was an outside hitter that appeared in 87 matches and 200 sets throughout her career. Over her four years, Miehlke never appeared in less than 18 matches in a season while playing in a career-high 25 contests as a freshman in 2009. At the conclusion of her career, Miehlke was part of the winningest senior class in program history with 68 total victories. Miehlke also succeeded off the court, as she was named Academic All-Summit League twice in her career in 2010 and 2011. She graduated with the Class of 2013 with a B.S.W. in Social Work and a minor in Sociology.
Before playing at Oakland, Miehlke attended Lake Zurich High School in Lake Zurich, Illinois, where she played on the co-conference championship squad in 2007 while earning All-Conference and All-Region selections throughout her career. She also played club for Rolling Thunder Volleyball.
Wake Forest will open the season on Aug. 28 with the Rambler Challenge in Chicago. The Deacs are set to take on Northwestern and tournament-host Loyola Chicago on Aug. 28 before closing the outing the following day on Aug. 29 against New Hampshire. The Demon Deacons' first home match of the year is scheduled for Sept. 18 in the Deacon Classic against Georgia. The other two teams competing in Wake Forest's tournament this year are VCU and reigning Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra.
