ELON, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team opened the 2015 fall campaign on Friday in the Elon Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with four players participating in the event.

The Deacs won three of their four singles matches on Friday morning before taking three of their scheduled doubles matches against players from various schools across the region. With three wins on the day, Xue Zhang has reached the 100-win mark as a Demon Deacon as she opens her senior campaign.

In singles action, freshman Joanna Zalewski picked up a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Mariana Ranzahuer of Georgia Southern in earning her first-career collegiate victory in the Maroon Singles flight. Zhang, who is also in the Maroon Singles flight, took down Carol Sigaki of USC Upstate by the score of 6-3, 6-0. Andrea Retolaza Andrade earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Blair Martin of Furman in the Phoenix Singles flight while Wake Forest's only loss of the day came when Courtney Meredith fell 6-3, 6-0 to Emily Groeneveld of Liberty.

On the doubles side, Zalewski paired up with Retolaza Andrade in the Maroon Doubles flight while Meredith partnered with Zhang in the Phoenix Doubles flight. Zalewski and Retolaza Andrade pulled out an 8-7 victory over Emory's Michelle Satterfield and Anna Fuhr. In the match, the Deacon duo was down 7-5 and faced match point at deuce, but the two recovered to win the game and take the next two games on the way to winning the match. In the Phoenix bracket, Meredith and Zhang picked up an 8-3 win over UNCG's Blaine Boaz and Corinne Blythe.

In second-round doubles action, Meredith and Zhang earned an 8-7 (3) win over another Emory pairing of Katarina Su and Bridget Harding to reach the finals of the Phoenix flight. Zalewski and Retolaza Andrade couldn't keep the magic going in the second round as the pair fell to Maria Khval and Anna Dollar by the score of 8-6.

The Deacs will continue the Elon Invitational on Saturday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Admission to the tournament is free. Action is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.
