Wake Forest Set to Host Deacon Classic
After starting the season with nine matches away from home, Wake Forest will host the Deacon Classic at Reynolds Gymnasium.
The Demon Deacons will take on Georgia in their home opener Friday night and will play Hofstra and VCU Saturday. Saturday's contest against the Rams will conclude the Deacs' 2015 nonconference schedule.
At the Deacon Invitational in 2014, Wake Forest defeated North Carolina Central, Davidson, Presbyterian and Wofford.
Last Time Out
Last week, the Demon Deacons competed in the High Point Panther Invitational. Wake Forest fell to Marshall on the first day of play, but rebounded on Day 2 to defeat Davidson and host High Point.
The trio of games left Wake Forest with a 6-3 record in 2015.
Kylie Long and Sam Boesch were named to the Panther Invitational All-Tournament Team. Long posted a team-high 56 kills, averaging 5.09 kills per set and 26 digs while Boesch totaled 24 kills and 17 digs with a .339 hitting percentage.
Home Sweet Home
Wake Forest will play its first three home matches of 2015 this week. The Demon Deacons posted an 11-6 home record a year ago.
The Deacs are 26-9 all-time in home-opening matches and have won their first home match in each of the last three seasons.
Scouting the Competition
Wake Forest has an 0-3 all-time record against Georgia after dropping their last match against the Bulldogs, 3-1, in Winston-Salem in 2010. Entering Friday with a 4-5 record on the season, Georgia has lost its last four matches, but has faced tough competition in that span, including ACC foes Georgia Tech and Syracuse, as well as 11th-ranked Wisconsin.
Defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra goes into the Deacon Classic with an 8-4 record, riding a four-match win streak. The Pride and Demon Deacons have never met. Junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova's mark of 3.98 kills per set is the best among all players in this weekend's Deacon Classic.
Fresh off a home win over Hampton Tuesday night, Virginia Commonwealth takes a 4-7 season mark into this weekend's tournament. The Demon Deacons hold a 6-5 all-time record against VCU, but the Rams earned a five-set road win in the teams' last meeting in 2011.
Next Up
The Demon Deacons will kick off ACC play next Wednesday when they make a trip to in-state opponent Duke. Their first home conference match will take place on Sept. 26 against Virginia.
