Elon Phoenix Classic Tournament Central
Wake Forest Back on the Road for Elon Phoenix Classic
Following its first tournament of the year last weekend in the Rambler Challenge, Wake Forest heads back out on the road this weekend to the Elon Phoenix Classic.
Over the course of the weekend, the Demon Deacons are set to face North Carolina Central, Charleston Southern and Elon.
Friday's contest against NCCU marks the sixth all-time meeting between the Deacs and Eagles with Wake Forest having won each of the previous five. NCCU has only won two sets in five matches all-time against Wake Forest. Saturday's first matchup against Charleston Southern will be the second all-time matchup after Wake Forest took the first contest 3-1 at home on Sept. 3, 2011.
Saturday's meeting with Elon will be the 25th matchup between the two programs with Wake Forest leading the series 16-7-1. Wake Forest has won each of the last six contests against the Phoenix dating back to Sept. 16, 1983, and has only conceded two sets in the 20 played.
Last Time Out
In the Rambler Challenge last week, senior Matalee Reed posted 45 kills over the three matches, including 20 kills on Saturday against New Hampshire.
Overall in the Rambler Challenge, Wake Forest posted a 1-2 record. It started the tournament with a 3-0 defeat against Northwestern before beating host-Loyola Chicago 3-0. The Deacs closed the weekend with a 3-1 loss to New Hampshire.
Road Warriors
Wake Forest is in the midst of a nine-match, three-tournament stretch to open the 2015 season.
This week at Elon, the Deacs are looking to get back to winning ways like it has the previous two years under head coach Ken Murczek. In Murczek's first season, Wake Forest went 11-1 to start the season. Last year, the Deacs opened the 2014 campaign 6-1.
Next Up
Up next for the Demon Deacons is the final road tournament of the season in High Point, North Carolina, for the High Point University Invitational.
At High Point, Wake Forest will take on Marshall on Friday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Davidson and High Point at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 12.
