GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest freshman quarterback Kendall Hinton has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Hinton, a 6-0, 185-pound true freshman from Durham, NC (Southern Durham) was called on to replace injured starter John Wolford early in Saturday's game at Army. Wolford was injured on Wake Forest's third play from scrimmage. Hinton came in to finish the drive but Wake Forest wound up punting. Wolford returned for two series before yielding again to Hinton who took over on Wake Forest's third play of the second quarter and finished the game.
Hinton finished 15 of 27 through the air for 159 yards. But more importantly, he ran for both of Wake Forest's touchdowns, scoring on a 15-yard run in the third quarter to tie the game at 7, then scored on a 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Demon Deacons ahead 14-7.
After Army tied the game at 14, Hinton took the Deacons on a 12-play, 64-yard drive that started at Wake Forest's own 7 yard line. During the drive, Hinton ran three times for 22 yards and completed two of four passes for 25 yards and drove the Deacons to the Army 29 before Mike Weaver kicked the game-winning 47-yard field goal. On the final drive, Hinton ran 13 yards on a 3rd-and-9 from Wake's own 8 to keep the drive alive.
Hinton, who carried 17 times for 101 yards, became the first Wake Forest 100-yard rusher since 2012 and the first Demon Deacon quarterback since Cory Randolph in 2004 to rush for over 100 yards. Hinton was the first freshman to eclipse the century mark in rushing at Wake Forest since Anthony Young in 2000.
Wake Forest hosts Indiana this Saturday at 12:30 at BB&T Field.
