
Wangerin's Goal Leads Deacs Past Miami

OXFORD, Ohio - The Wake Forest field hockey team scored two unanswered goals to come back and beat Miami 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Krysta Wangerin scored the game-winning goal and notched an assist for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest extended its win streak to three games and improved to 8-2 on the season. Miami is now 6-5 on the year.
Miami took an early lead on a penalty corner goal by Ashley Laskowitz. Bea Dechant shot from top of circle on a corner and Laskowitz deflected it in to the goal in the 23rd minutes.
In the final minute of the first half Wake Forest scored the equalizer. Jule Grashoff scored with 28.8 seconds remaining in the opening period, assisted by Wangerin, to tie the game heading in to the break.
Wangerin scored the game-winning goal 2:21 in to the second half. Jess Newak took the initial shot on a penalty corner and Wangerin was there to tip the shot past the goalkeeper. Newak and Emily Conroe were credited with the assists.
Wake Forest held an 8-4 advantage in shots and each team had three penalty corners.
Senior Valerie Dahmen made two saves for the Demon Deacons, including one in the final minute of the game to preserve the win.
The Deacs wrap up a three-game road trip at Appalachian State on Friday. The game begins at 5 p.m.
