MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began its quest for a second consecutive title at the Primland Collegiate Invitational with a strong performance on day one of the event. The Demon Deacons were tied for second place when conditions halted play in the middle of Monday's second round at the Highland Course at Primland.

North Carolina leads the tournament at 16-under par. The Demon Deacons are three shots back at 13-under par, tied with Auburn, which was one of two teams to completely finish the second round.

The tournament has been shortened to a 45-hole event after rain and fog created slow conditions during round one and most teams didn't complete the second round. The conclusion of round two will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, as will the start of the nine-hole third round.

"It was really hard on these guys with all the starting and stopping," said head coach Jerry Haas. "They hung in there beautifully. We still need to finish our second round and maybe we can play nine more holes after that. Hopefully we can get everyone's second round finished and at least make this a 36-hole event."

Individually, Wake Forest is led by sophomore Paul McBride, who is 9-under through 15 holes of his second round. Fellow sophomore Will Zalatoris is tied for seventh place at 3-under through 12 holes. Ben Balter is at even par, Lee Detmer is 1-over and Davis Womble is 2-over, all through 12 holes.

Five Demon Deacons are competing as individuals, with freshman Kyle Sterbinsky in fourth place at 6-under through 12 holes. Classmate Cameron Young is tied for 16th-place at even par through 12 holes.

"I want thank everyone at Primland for all their help, along with all the volunteers," said Haas. "It was a lot of work on everyone's part, in really trying conditions with the fog and rain. I appreciate everyone's patience today."
