MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team finished third at the 2015 Primland Collegiate Invitational as the weather forced the tournament to be shortened to 36 holes. The Demon Deacons, who concluded play in rain-soaked conditions on Tuesday morning, finished behind North Carolina and Auburn at the event at the Highland Course at Primland.
The Tar Heels won the tournament with a 36-hole score of 558 (18-under par). Auburn, which was one of just two teams to complete the second round on Monday night, was second with a score of 563 (13-under). The Demon Deacons, who were in second place when darkness halted play Monday night, finished third with a 7-under total of 569.
Michael Johnson of Auburn won the individual title with a total of 15-under over the two rounds. Carter Jenkins of North Carolina, who shot the low-round of the tournament with a second-round 63, finished second at 13-under. Paul McBride was the low Deacon, finishing third with a total of 9-under.
"It is the second tournament of the season and hopefully this experience will help us down the line," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The conditions were very tough today, right on the edge of playable/unplayable. The scores were good for some of the guys and I am proud of how they all hung in there. It didn't look like we were going to be able to even finish 36 holes, but somehow we were able to get it in. Maybe if the conditions were good and we played 54 holes we could have had a chance to win. But my hat is off to North Carolina, who played really well to shoot 18-under and win."
McBride was one of three Wake Forest players to finish in the top-10. Will Zalatoris carded a second round 69 to finish tied for seventh with a total of 2-under. Freshman Kyle Sterbinsky, making his collegiate debut by playing as an individual, finished sixth with a score of 4-under. Lee Detmer, another Deacon freshman making his debut, was tied for 12th place after back-to-back round of even-par 72.
The Demon Deacons return to action next week with the Nike Collegiate Invitational, held Oct. 4-6 in Portland, Ore.
