RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wake Forest sophomore Maddie Huster scored a second-overtime game-winner as the Demon Deacons knocked off Oregon, 1-0, at Dail Soccer Field on Sunday.
After 100 scoreless, back-and-forth minutes of play, Huster delivered for Wake Forest's (2-1-2) first overtime winner in more than two years, with the last coming against North Texas in August 2013.
Sarah Medina's original shot deflected off a defender to Huster, who buried it in the back of the net for her first-career goal.
"It feels great. Friday and today we pushed really hard in the overtimes. We didn't have a mentality to tie, we were pushing for the goal," head coach Tony da Luz said. "It's great that Huster gets her first goal in an overtime win. It was a great finish for her, and a great team win. Hopefully it puts some pep in our step heading into next weekend against UCLA."
Oregon (1-5) held a slight advantage in shots, 11-9, but the Deacs took more shots on goal, 4-3.
Wake Forest again split up the action for the goalkeepers, with Nonie Frishette and Lindsay Preston combining for the third shutout of the season. Frishette made her first start and recorded three saves, while Preston did not have to record a save in the second half or overtime periods.
The Deacs went 50 minutes during the middle of the game without recording a shot, but responded by taking four in the last 20 minutes, including Huster's game-winner.
Wake Forest returns home for four straight games, beginning with a 7 p.m. game against UCLA on Friday, Sept. 11.
