Deacs Head South For Matchup Against Miami
Away from home for the fifth time in the last six games, Wake Forest heads to Coral Gables, Florida, for a 7 p.m. matchup against No. 21/20 Miami inside BankUnited Center on ESPN3.
Wake Forest is one of three ACC teams to have started the conference schedule with three of its first four on the road (Georgia Tech, Boston College). The Deacs are also one of two teams to have played each of their first two ACC games away from home (Boston College).
Last Time Out
Wake Forest led for more than 33 minutes of game action against Virginia on Sunday afternoon, but the Cavaliers put together a fourth-quarter comeback at LJVM Coliseum to win 52-50.
The Deacs led 47-42 entering the fourth quarter, but Wake Forest was held without a field goal for the final 7:42 of the game as Virginia mounted its comeback.
Overall, Wake Forest committed 31 turnovers, the final one coming with six seconds left that sealed the game for Virginia.
Scouting the Hurricanes
Miami is back in the national polls this week after falling out of the Top 25 last week. The Hurricanes check in at No. 21 in the AP poll and No. 20 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.
On a brief two-game winning streak after falling to Virginia on Jan. 3 in Charlottesville, Miami is coming off a 24-point win over Pittsburgh last Thursday and a 34-point victory over Clemson last time out on Sunday.
The Hurricanes are led by Adrienne Motley, who is averaging 15.9 points per contest this season. In ACC play, Miami has had a balanced attack with Motley, Laura Cornelius and Jessica Thomas each averaging 12 points per game while Keyona Hayes is posting 10 points per contest.
Series History
Last time these two teams met, Wake Forest pulled out a 60-59 victory thanks to a buzzer beater by then-freshman Amber Campbell. On Feb. 26, 2015, Campbell received the inbounds pass with 2.4 seconds to go in the game, dribbled once to her right and drained a mid-range jumper as time expired to give Wake Forest the win.
Wake Forest is 2-3 in the last five meetings between the two teams, but the Deacs are 6-5 over the course of the last 11 contests. The Demon Deacons hold the longest winning streak in the series as Wake Forest won four in a row from Feb. 24, 2008, to March 4, 2010.
Thursday marks Wake Forest's fourth trip to Miami since its last road win against the Hurricanes. Last time the Deacs won at Miami came on Feb 1, 2009, a 78-69 victory. Since that win, though, Wake Forest has won both of the neutral site games between the two..
Next Time Out
Wake Forest will return home after Thursday night's game for a short two-game homestand, starting with Syracuse on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m.
After welcoming the Orange to LJVM Coliseum, the Demon Deacons will welcome in-state rival North Carolina to Winston-Salem on Thursday, Jan. 21, for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN3.
