WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 71-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team started its spring season on a high note, defeating College of Charleston and Winthrop at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Monday. The Demon Deacons swept the Cougars, 7-0, before downing the Eagles by a final score of 5-2.

The Demon Deacons wasted little time getting on the board in their season-opener, using a 6-1 Anna Ulyashchenko and Kimmy Guerin win and a 6-0 victory by Andrea Retolaza and Luisa Fernandez in doubles to jump in front, 1-0.

Wake Forest's first-year players made an immediate impact, guiding the Deacs to a 4-0 lead to clinch the team win. Ulyashchenko was the first to finish, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3. Fellow freshman Emma Davis made it 3-0 with a victory by the same score at the top position before rookie Joanna Zalewski claimed a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 4.

To complete the sweep, Guerin concluded a straight-set victory by winning a second-set tiebreaker. Xue Zhang and Samantha Asch then capped two-set wins of their own at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively.

The Deacs did not drop a set in their opening match.

As was the case in its first match of the day, Wake Forest got on the board first with the doubles point. The Deacons only lost one game in the competition as Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko won, 6-1, at No. 1 and duos of Emma Davis and Samantha Asch and Andrea Retolaza and Luisa Fernandez recorded 6-0 sweeps at the second and third spots, respectively.

The only singles matches the Deacs dropped were decided by third-set super tiebreakers.

Wake Forest went up, 3-0, thanks to matching 6-0, 6-1 wins by Asch at No. 5 and Fernandez at No. 6. Guerin sealed the Demon Deacons' second victory of the day by dispatching Alice Garcia, 6-4, 6-3, at the top position. The junior from Weston, Conn. went 4-0 in singles and doubles combined on the day.

Winthrop got on the board with a comeback win by Mariana Humberg at No. 3. Zalewski, who dropped her first set, then completed a come-from-behind win at No. 4 with a 10-6 defeat of Caitlin Cridland in their match tiebreaker. The Eagles then closed the match by claiming No. 2 singles as Lauren Proctor held off Emma Davis, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11).

Next Up
The Demon Deacons next play on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the road against 61st-ranked Tennessee. They return home Jan. 30 for a doubleheader against Elon and Furman.
