Deacs Set Out on First Road Trip
After winning four-straight matches at home to begin the year, the No. 11-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to No. 25 Oklahoma State and second-ranked Oklahoma this week.
The Demon Deacons play the Cowboys Friday at 7 p.m. ET in Stillwater, Okla. and head to Norman, Okla. Sunday at 1 p.m. ET to take on the Sooners.
Last Time Out
As one of 15 regional hosts for ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Wake Forest defeated No. 59 Auburn and No. 43 Tennessee to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships for the first time in program history. That tournament will take place from Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.
After dropping the doubles point, the Demon Deacons reeled off four-straight singles wins to top Auburn.
The doubles point looked to be in jeopardy again against the Volunteers, but a rally by Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri to beat No. 23-ranked Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski at the top spot and a comeback by Petros Chrysochos and Jon Ho at No. 3 put the Deacs up, 1-0. Wake Forest then cruised in singles to win, 4-0.
Seraphim and Dennis Uspensky both improved to 4-0 in singles on the spring, while Petros Chysochos, Jon Ho and Romain Bogaerts also won singles matches.
Deacs in the Rankings
After a Sweet 16 run in 2015, the Demon Deacons started the season ranked No. 11. The Deacs have kept their ranking in back-to-back weeks since the season began by starting 4-0.
In singles, Skander Mansouri leads a trio of nationally-ranked Deacons by checking in at No. 26. Jon Ho and Maksim Kan are ranked No. 103 and No. 110, respectively.
On the doubles side, Mansouri and Christian Seraphim rank No. 25, while Kan and Romain Bogaerts are No. 27 in the nation. To go with his singles ranking, Ho pairs with Keivon Tabrizi to rank No. 51 in doubles.
Freshmen Making an Impact
Wake Forest welcomed freshmen Eric Rutledge and Alan Gadjiev to the fold at the start of the school year before adding Dennis Uspensky and Petros Chrysochos just prior to the spring season.
Both Chrysochos and Uspensky have made an impact already. Chrysochos is 2-1 in singles, including a 1-1 mark at the No. 1 spot, while Uspensky has gone 4-0 from the No. 5 position.
In doubles, Uspensky has paired with Romain Bogaerts, while Chrysochos has partnered with Jon Ho. Both duos have seen action at Nos. 2 and 3 and have overall records of 3-1.
Up Next
Following their trip to the Sooner State, the Demon Deacons will host 59th-ranked South Carolina next Friday at 5 p.m.
Before heading to the ITA National Indoor Championships, Wake Forest will play a rematch against Tennessee on the road. That match is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. ET.
