WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The 64th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team won both matches of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, sweeping both Elon and Furman by scores of 7-0.

The pair of victories improved the Demon Deacons' record on the season to 5-0. The team has won its first five matches for the seventh time in program history.

In singles, Kimmy Guerin, Joanna Zalewski and Samantha Asch all improved to 5-0 on the spring with two victories on the day.

To kick off the day, Wake Forest jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Elon by claiming the doubles point. Samantha Asch and Emma Davis gave the Deacons an edge by winning, 6-1, at the second position before No. 51-ranked Andrea Retolaza and Luisa Fernandez sealed the point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3.

The Demon Deacons continued to roll in singles, winning all six matches. The hosts quickly jumped out a 3-0 lead when Kimmy Guerin won at No. 1 after her opponent, Olivia Lucas, retired with an injury in the second set. Almost simultaneously, Joanna Zalewski wrapped up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4.

The team victory was secured when Davis took a 6-2, 6-0 decision in the second flight. Rounding out the Deacs' sweep with singles wins were Asch at No. 5, Anna Ulyashchenko at No. 3 and Fernandez at No. 6. All of the wins came in straight sets.

For their second win of the day, the Demon Deacons again used the doubles competition to create an early lead. Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko got things started at No. 1 with a 6-3 win. They were followed by Emma Davis and Kasey Gardiner, who won by the same score at the third spot to seal the 1-0 team lead.

In singles, Davis blanked Katarina Weymouth at No. 2 in back-to-back sets to make it 2-0. Guerin and Joanna Zalewski then capped straight-set triumphs to lock up the team win.

For the second-straight match, Asch made it 5-0 with a two-set win. Xue Zhang then improved to 2-0 in dual match singles with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win at No. 6. She was trailing, 4-1, in her first set before storming back to seize the victory. Ulyashchenko concluded the match with a match tiebreaker triumph at No. 3.

Next Up
The Deacons will play their next five games on the road, starting with a Feb. 6 contest at VCU. The last match of that stretch is their ACC opener at Clemson. Wake Forest will return to Winston-Salem to kick off a season-long, five-match homestand with a doubleheader on Feb. 26. They will start that day with a conference contest against Louisville before ending the day versus UNC-Greensboro.
