GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Wake Forest middle blocker Caitlyn Della was named ACC Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon, the league announced.
The Cary, N.C.-native had a great week on offense, recording impressive marks in kills and blocks. In the Oct. 12 match against Duke, Della recorded only four errors on 13 kills and 27 attempts to finish the match with a .333 clip. She also recorded two solo blocks and three block assists to finish with 16.5 of the squad's 80 points in the 3-2 loss to the Blue Devils. Della then had another impressive match against Virginia on Oct. 14, recording a career-high 15 kills and one error on 25 attempts for a .560 attack percentage. Della also recorded a solo block and two block assists in the 3-2 match victory. She finished the week with 28 kills and only five errors for a .442 attack percentage and eight total blocks.
Della has already made an impact on the Wake Forest program in her few months here. "Caitlyn's ability to come in and contribute at a high level has allowed our team to develop faster than anticipated," said head coach Bill Ferguson on Della. She has played in all 78 sets for the Demon Deacons this season and is currently third behind hitters Long and Rassenfoss for total kills with 142. Her .305 attack percentage leads the squad while her .333 attack percentage in conference play is good for sixth in the league. Della also leads the Demon Deacons with a combined 73 total blocks, 14 solo blocks and 59 block assists.
"I'm thrilled that Caitlyn is being recognized," said Ferguson of Della. "She has made significant improvement in her game the last several weeks and she put it all together this week. She has a really quick first step which helps her blocking and attacking immensely along with a great arm which allows her to both terminate and move the ball around. She has a great future here. We're thrilled she's a Deac!"
The Demon Deacons have now received three ACC accolades this season for the first time since 2011. Caroline Rassenfoss previously received the ACC Freshman of the Week honor Sept. 26 due to her impressive career-high 26-kill match against Virginia while junior Kylie Long was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 3 for her double-doubles against Louisville and Notre Dame.
The Demon Deacons wrap-up a six-game homestand this weekend that includes taking on Georgia Tech Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. and Clemson on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
