FORT WORTH, Texas. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began the defense of its Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational title with an even par round of 280 Sunday during first round play at Colonial Country Club. The Demon Deacons are in fourth place after the opening day of a tournament featuring nine of the top 14 teams in the nation.

Oklahoma leads after the first day at 7-under, followed by Vanderbilt at 5-under, Florida at 3-under and the Deacs at even par. Those are the only four teams in the 15-team field to shoot par or better on Sunday at Colonial.

"We played a very good, solid round today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I know the players are a little disappointed in their finish. We ended the round on the hardest holes of the course, but adjustments will be made. This is a great field and we are right up there with the leaders after one round."

Cameron Young led the Deacs on Sunday, shooting a 3-under round of 67. After being 2-over through five holes, Young had seven birdies to just two bogeys the rest of the day and is T-3rd, one shot off the lead.

Will Zalatoris, playing close to his hometown of Plano, shot a 1-under 69 and is T-14th after the first round. Eric Bae is also in the top 20, shooting even par 70 to be T-16th. Woody Woodward rounded out the scoring four for the Deacs with a 4-over 74, while Paul McBride shot a 6-over round of 76.

The Demon Deacons won the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational last year when it was held at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Ore.

The tournament continues Monday and runs through Tuesday at Colonial Country Club.
