WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team claimed a back-and-forth affair over Syracuse in double overtime, 3-2, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night.
The Demon Deacons (10-6-0, 2-6-0 ACC) stay alive in ACC and NCAA Tournament contention. Wake Forest moves into a tie for 11th with six points in the league, four points outside the top eight with two games to play. The win also guarantees Wake Forest a winning record in 2016.
With just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Sarah Teegarden took a free kick from just outside box, sneaking it inside the left post past a shielded keeper for the game-winner.
After a Syracuse (8-6-3, 1-5-2 ACC) goal from Stephanie Skilton in the middle of the first half, Peyton Perea and Bayley Feist scored back-to-back goals for the Deacs in the second half.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Perea finished off a Reci Smith through ball from 15 yards upper-90 inside the left post for the equalizer, making the score 1-1.
Feist, who doubled her previous career-highs with eight shots and five shots on goal, was finally rewarded with a score in the 83rd minute, heading a cross from Sarah Medina inside the left post.
But this time it was the Orange who battled back. At the 88:03 mark, a skied ball landed at the feet of Skilton in the box, who found the back of the net for the second time of the game, knotting up the score at 2-2 and sending it to overtime.
Wake Forest held significant advantages in shots (21-9), shots on goal (10-5) and corner kicks (7-3).
The Deacs have their home finale on Sunday, playing No. 11 Notre Dame at noon. The game airs live on RSN, which includes Fox Sports South.
