BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Despite a late rally, the Wake Forest women's soccer team dropped its regular season finale to Virginia Tech, 1-0, at Thompson Field on Thursday night.

The Demon Deacons (10-8-0, 2-8-0) took four shots in the closing minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Hokies (11-5-3, 3-4-3) took advantage of Murielle Tiernan's 10th goal of the year in the 35th minute, as she got behind the defense on a pass from Kristina Diana for a point-blank game-winner.

Lindsay Preston was strong in goal for the Deacs, making six saves on seven chances. Mandy McGlynn stopped the only shot on goal she faced for Virginia Tech.

Caroline Wootten had a pair of scoring chances in the final minutes. One effort from the left side hit the side of the net. Another, started by a long ball from Ally Haran and cross from Kahla Seymour, was one-timed just over the crossbar.

Virginia Tech had a 13-5 advantage in shots and 4-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Deacs will now await the NCAA Division I Selection Show, which airs on Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m.
