
Wake Forest Falls to Army 21-13

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Army West Point scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to down Wake Forest 21-13 on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Field.
Wake Forest (5-3, 2-2 ACC) led 10-7 after three quarters but could not stop the Army West Point (5-3) rushing attack in the fourth quarter. Army West Point rushed for 107 yards in the final frame and was 3-for-3 on third downs. Wake Forest could not solve the Army West Point defense in the fourth quarter and managed just 64 total yards as the Black Knights held the ball for 11:11.
Quarterback John Wolford completed 23 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. Wolford also rushed for 66 yards. Running back Matt Colburn tacked on 40 rushing yards while Tabari Hines had a team high 78 receiving yards and one touchdown catch. Alex Bachman had six catches for 51 yards.
Marquel Lee had another stellar night on defense with 12 tackles and five for loss. Jaboree Williams had three tackles for loss including a sack. Jessie Bates III had an interception for the Deacons while Thomas Brown and Cameron Glenn each had a forced fumble.
The Black Knights made it a 7-0 game midway through the first quarter with a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw to Edgar Poe.
Wake Forest tied the game up in the second quarter following a nine-play, 69-yard drive. After a 13-yard draw play from Colburn, a 13-yard rush from Wolford led the Deacons to the Army West Point 3-yard line.
On the ensuing play, Wolford connected with Hines for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Wake Forest and Army West Point headed into the locker room at halftime tied 7-7.
Wake Forest forced an Army West Point turnover on the Black Knights first drive of the third quarter. Brown forced the fumble which was recovered by Duke Ejiofor. The fumble recovery put the Deacons on the Army West Point 35-yard line. Mike Weaver kicked a 37-yard field goal later in the drive as Wake Forest took a 10-7 lead.
With the Black Knights marching down the field late in the third quarter, Bates picked off a pass in the end zone and returned it to the Wake Forest 25-yard line. It was his fourth interception of the season.
Army West Point took a 14-10 lead early in the fourth quarter after an 11-yard touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw. The Black Knights added a touchdown with 2:54 left in the game as Darnell Woolfolk powered through for a 6-yard score.
Wake Forest kicked a 34-yard field goal with 1:25 left in the game but Army West Point closed out the game for the 21-13 victory.
Defense
- Duke Ejiofor recorded one tackle for loss which gives him one TFL in each game this season.
- Wake Forest also held Army West Point to its second lowest rushing total of the year with only 238 rushing yards. The Black Knights were the second-ranked rushing attack in the nation coming into the game.
- Ryan Janvion is now tied for 11th in school history with 322 career tackles, tying Marc Hester (1977-79).
Homecoming
- Wake Forest had its highest home attendance in the 2016 season with an announced number of 27,948.
- In addition to the homecoming crowd, Wake Forest honored the 2006 ACC champion Wake Forest football team after the first quarter.
Run Game
- Wake Forest came within 13 yards of eclipsing its rushing total from last season.
- The Demon Deacons have also rushed for more than 100 yards against Army West Point for six-straight games.
