WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest was swept by Virginia Tech 3-0 Friday night at LJVM Coliseum.
The loss marks the first three-set sweep for the Demon Deacons this season and the first since Nov. 22, 2015 against Miami.
Wake Forest (6-10) got off to a solid start, pacing Virginia Tech (8-8) throughout the first set. Katie Moore would lead the Demon Deacon offense with four of her six-total kills but Tech held steady, recording a .269 hitting percentage. Despite the battle, three consecutive attack errors from the Deacs would seal the set 25-19 in favor of the Hokies.
The second set was an uphill battle for the Deacs, who quickly fell behind, 4-0. The set was marred by errors, with each squad recording seven attack errors and a combined seven service errors. Despite best-efforts from Kylie Long and Caitlyn Della, who each recorded three kills in the set, the squad finished the second set with a .023 attack percentage. The Hokies gained a 2-0 match lead after securing a 25-23 set victory.
The Deacs came out swinging for the third set and fought for every point. Wake Forest came out 2-0 but both squards would fight for every point. Leading 16-14, Katie Moore's first career service ace forced the Hokies into a time out. However, neither team would back down in the cat-and-mouse set that included 20 tied scores, seven lead changes and extra points to ultimately determine the Hokies the 31-29 set champions and the 3-0 match victors.
The Demon Deacons continue conference play Sunday against Pittsburgh. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. in LJVM Coliseum.
