WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest defeated Ohio 6-1 on Sunday at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest (6-5) came out hot. Forward Nicola Pluta put the Demon Deacons on the board in the third minute with a five-yard shot and assist from Megan Anderson. Sophomore Jule Grashoff quickly doubled the lead with an unassisted goal after driving down the field and beating out Ohio's goalkeeper Alex Pennington. The Deacs were then awarded five consecutive penalty corners within the span of three minutes. Despite getting four shots, they failed to net the ball.
Ohio (6-6) managed to sneak in a goal in the 13th minute thanks to an unassisted goal by Kendall Ballard. The goal would also be the only shot for the Bobcats in the first half. Sophomore Emily Adamson topped off a stellar first half with her first goal of the season- a penalty corner shot with assists from Jessy Silfer and Brittany Dickinson.
The second half proved to be much of the same. Pluta netted her second goal of the game in the 39th minute. The wide open shot was assisted by forward Madi Julius, as both players managed to fake-out the Ohio goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, the Pluta-Julius duo struck again as Pluta snuck a goal in the left corner to bring the score to 5-1. Jule Grashoff netted the final goal of the contest with an unassisted crossover tap-in in the 62nd minute. Wake Forest finished the game with a score of 6-1.
Freshman Nicola Pluta recorded her second hat trick of the season. Pluta now has a team-leading 14 goals on the season, eight of which have come in the past three contests.
Ohio was faced with a strong Wake Forest defense and managed to get only two shots off, one of which was the first half goal from Kendall Ballard. Cat O'Connor now moves to 6-5-0 on the season.
The Demon Deacons return to action for their Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 14 against Duke. The game will be held at Kentner Stadium and is set for 6 p.m.
