BLACKSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest fell to Virginia Tech in straight sets on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Wake Forest (9-18, 5-11 ACC) came out strong in the first set, taking an early 3-0 lead. The squads traded points until Virginia Tech (10-16, 5-11 ACC) went on a 7-1 run to tie the match at eight-all and force the Deacs into a time out. Coming out of the break, the Hokies took the lead and then some, forcing Wake Forest to burn its second time out down 14-10. It looked like the Hokies were running away with the set until a pair of kills from Caroline Rassenfoss and Kylie Long with a VT attack error put Virginia Tech into a time out. Out of the break, Hanna Lee recorded a kill and back-to-back service aces to bring the Deacs within two points, 22-20, and force the Hokies to burn their second time out. However, the Hokies managed to take the first set, 25-22.
The second set began with the squads trading points until Virginia Tech went on a four-point run to force a Wake Forest time out with the score at 10-5. While the teams traded points, the Hokies held the Deacs at arm's length. Virginia Tech ultimately took the second set, 25-16.
The third set was mainly controlled by the Hokies, who jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Eventually, Wake Forest took a time out down 10-5 to reset. After the break, the Deacs went on a 7-4 run to force a Hokie time out. The Deacs continued to run after the break and managed to pull within one but the Hokies found their stride. Virginia Tech took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Long led the Deacs' offense with 11 kills while Rassenfoss followed closely with nine. Caroline Wolf tallied 23 digs while Katie Moore and Caitlyn Della had two blocks each to cap the defense.
The Demon Deacons return to Winston-Salem next for their final pair of home matches this season. The Deacs face Miami on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at LJVM Coliseum.
