RALEIGH, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball fell to NC State by a final score of 3-0 on Wednesday at Reynolds Coliseum.
Junior setter Bailey Shurbet recorded 27 assists in the affair to bring her Wake Forest career total to 1,066. She is now just three assists away from cracking the top 10 in program history.
NC State (19-12, 12-7 ACC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but a kill from Hanna Lee put Wake Forest (9-21, 5-14 ACC) on the board and the Deacs began fighting back. The Demon Deacons were slowly chipping away at the Wolfpack's lead when a pair of kills from Caroline Rassenfoss and Caitlyn Della plus a service ace from Caroline Wolf tied the score 10-all. However, NC State went on a 7-2 run to take the lead and forced Wake Forest to burn both of its timeouts. The stoppages couldn't slow the Wolfpack, though, as they sealed the set in their favor, 25-18. Rassenfoss led the squad in the opening frame with four kills while Lee and Della followed closely behind with three.
The Deacs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set thanks to a Wolfpack attack error, a service ace from Lee and a kill from Kylie Long. However, the Pack bounced right back. The squads traded points to tally nine ties but the Wolfpack went on a 15-5 run to end the second set 25-15. Katie Moore and Long tallied three kills each in the second set to cap the Wake Forest offense.
Coming out of the break, NC State and Wake Forest traded points in the third set. Tied at 10-all, the Wolfpack recorded a trio of kills to force the Deacs into a timeout. However, the Wolfpack continued to extended their lead after the break to force the Deacs to burn their second timeout down 17-12. From there, the Deacs fought hard but the Wolfpack ultimately took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Della and Rassenfoss led the Deacs' offense with seven kills each. Lee and Long tallied six and Moore recorded five to round out the offense. Della also recorded three blocks to cap the Deacs' defensive effort.
The Demon Deacons wrap up the 2016 season Saturday, Nov. 26 against No. 6 North Carolina. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
