Barb Weinberg Named UMass Field Hockey Head Coach

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest associate head coach Barb Weinberg has accepted an offer to become the head field hockey coach at the University of Massachusetts, UMass Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced Thursday.
Weinberg has served on head coach Jennifer Averill's staff at Wake Forest for three seasons and was promoted to associate head coach for the 2016 season. She helped guide the Demon Deacons to an ACC Championship in 2014 and two NCAA tournament appearances in 2014 and 2015.
"While I am incredibly excited to take this next step in my coaching career at UMass, Wake Forest will always hold a special place in my heart," said Weinberg. "I will truly miss the athletes and staff who I worked with on a daily basis. I want to thank Jen Averill for being a great mentor and preparing me to lead my own program."
Weinberg worked primarily with goalkeeping and deep defense for the Demon Deacons while also serving as the recruitment coordinator.
"UMass has inherited what Wake Forest already knew and truly appreciated: a first class, hard-working professional woman who will be a positive influence on many student athletes at the University of Massachusetts," said Averill. "Barb has been a wonderful addition to Wake Forest and will be greatly missed by the staff, hockey program and entire department. We wish her continued success and professional development."
Weinberg has also held assistant coaching positions at American University, University of Maryland and University of Iowa. She played collegiately at Iowa from 2001-2004 where she was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and two-time All American. She also played with the U.S. National Team from 2005-10 where she was the alternate goalkeeper for the US at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
