ATLANTA - Wake Forest senior Devin Thomas pulled down his 1,000th-career rebound and scored a team-high 20 points, but the Demon Deacon men's basketball team fell to Georgia Tech, 71-66, at the Hank McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta on Wednesday evening.
The Deacons led for 24 of the first 26 minutes, but were unable to snap their season-long losing streak, which was extended to nine games. Their record dipped to 10-14, including 1-11 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets won their third conference contest and improved to 13-11 overall.
Georgia Tech never relinquished a led it gained with 11:08 to play. A pair of free throws by Thomas and a 3-pointer by Bryant Crawford cut a seven-point deficit to two with 47 seconds to play, but Marcus Georges-Hunt answered by sinking all four of his free throws in the final minute to preserve the victory for the hosts.
The Deacs started the game fast, using a 19-8 run to grab a 24-13 first-half lead, its largest since Jan. 26. Georgia Tech responded, however, and tied the score at 31. Wake Forest took a 39-35 lead into the intermission.
Thomas had 14 points and six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes and hit the 1,000-rebound plateau with 5:12 left in the second half. He became the fourth Demon Deacon to reach that mark, joining Dickie Hemric, Tim Duncan and Len Chappell.
Crawford was the only other Wake Forest player to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points. He also led the team with six assists. Georges-Hunt sparked the Yellow Jackets with a career-high 30 points. Charles Mitchell posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Wednesday's game began a three-game road swing for the Demon Deacons, who pick up play on Saturday at NC State. They will also travel to Pittsburgh before returning home to play Boston College on Feb. 21.
