Wake Forest to Debut at National Indoors
No. 10-ranked Wake Forest will make its first-ever appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships this weekend at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
The event features the top-16 ranked teams in the country. The Deacs are seeded ninth and will open play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against No. 8-seeded Oklahoma. The winner will advance to the quarterfinal round to take on the winner of the opening-round match between host and No. 1 Virginia and No. 16 San Diego.
The Demon Deacons defeated then-No. 2 Oklahoma, 5-2, on Jan. 31. The Sooners, who won the National Team Indoors last year, were the highest-ranked team the Demon Deacons have ever beaten. Oklahoma had not lost at home since 2013 prior to the match.
Last Time Out
Last week, the Deacons defeated No. 55 South Carolina at home and No. 40 Tennessee on the road. The score of both matches was 7-0.
Wake Forest improved to 7-1 on the year, including a 4-0 mark against teams from the SEC. The win against the Gamecocks gave the Deacs a 15-match home winning streak dating back to last season.
Moving Up
Wake Forest began the season with its highest preseason ranking in program history at No. 11 after making its third Sweet 16 appearance a year ago.
After a 5-1 start, the Demon Deacons moved up to No. 10. They are now ranked in the top 10 nationally for the first time since 2007. They are now 7-1 on the year, including 6-1 against ranked foes.
The 2007 Deacs achieved the highest national ranking in program history, climbing as high as No. 7. That team also reached the Sweet 16.
Strong at the Top
Sophomore Skander Mansouri and freshman Petros Chrysochos have split matches at the top two singles spots this season. Both players are 2-1 at No. 1 and 3-0 at No. 2.
Mansouri earned his first ACC Player of the Week honor last week after downing No. 68-ranked Julian Cash and 2015 ITA National Player of the Year and No. 60-ranked Axel Alvarez Llamas in singles.
Chrysochos downed a pair of nationally ranked singles opponents last week in No. 116 Alex Fennell of South Carolina and No. 75 Igor Smelyanski of Tennessee.
Deacs in the Rankings
In singles, Skander Mansouri leads a trio of nationally-ranked Deacons by checking in at No. 28. Jon Ho, who began the season at No. 103, moved up to 79th and freshman Petros Chrysochos made his first appearance in the rankings at No. 125.
Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan have not played together in the spring, but are ranked 39th in doubles after going 9-3 together in the fall.
Up Next
The Demon Deacons open an 11-match homestand against Texas on Feb. 27. They will host Texas Tech the following day.
ACC play for the Deacs begins on Match 4 against Georgia Tech.
