LOS CABOS, Mexico – The Wake Forest men's golf team began play Sunday at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate with first round play at Los Cabos Querencia. The Deacons shot a 10-over round of 294 and are tied for 12th place after 18 holes.
"We were not committed to target lines and we didn't have enough chances today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Sometimes in a format with a shotgun start, it all depends on what holes you start on. On this course, you must be able to put in play off the tee and we made too many doubles today."
Paul McBride led the Deacons during the first round, posting a 1-under round of 70. He is tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard.
Will Zalatoris shot a 2-over round of 73, while Davis Womble was 3-over with a first round 74. Lee Detmer carded a first round 77, while fellow freshman Cameron Young posted a 78.
The Deacons will continue action at the tournament, which features nine top-30 teams, on Monday. The event concludes on Tuesday.
