KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 10th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team won its third match in a row, defeating No. 40 Tennessee, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. The Demon Deacons improved to 7-1 on the season with the win.
The Deacons upped their record against ranked teams to 6-1, including 4-0 against teams from the SEC. The victory was their second against the Volunteers this season. The Deacs punched their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-0 triumph against the Vols on Jan. 26 in the teams' ITA Kick-Off Weekend finale.
Wake Forest opened the match by taking the doubles point. Romain Bogaerts and Dennis Uspensky blanked Tennessee's No. 3 duo of Preston Touliatos and Jack Heslin, 6-0, before the Deacons' No. 2 tandem of Jon Ho and Petros Chrysochos pulled out a 6-4 win against the Volunteers' Timo Stodder and Igor Smelyanski.
The hosts claimed a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 flight, but the Deacs had already clinched a 1-0 lead in the dual match.
Reigning ACC Player of the Week Skander Mansouri raced out to a quick 6-0 set win en route to taking a 6-0, 6-4 triumph against Stodder at No. 2 to pad the Demon Deacons' lead. They are now 6-0 at No. 2 singles in 2016.
To secure the team win, Bogaerts and Uspensky finished off straight-set victories at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. The matches came to and end almost simultaneously.
Christian Seraphim gave the Deacons a fifth point with a match tiebreaker triumph at No. 6. Chrysochos did the same against the 75th-ranked Smelyanski at the top position to make it 6-0. The Larnaca, Cyprus native now has a 5-1 collegiate singles record, including a 2-0 mark against ranked opponents.
Rounding out the shutout was Ho, who won back-to-back set tiebreakers against Luis Valero.
The Demon Deacons will resume action when they make their first-ever appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. from Feb. 12-15. Wake Forest then begins an 11-match homestand against Texas on Feb. 27.
