STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team has the first round lead at the 2016 Schenkel Invitational after shooting 18-under during Friday's play at Forest Heights Country Club. Senior Davis Womble has the individual lead of the tournament, tying his career-low round with a 64.
In a tournament that features nine top-50 teams, the 10th-ranked Deacons have a four-shot lead after the first 18 holes.
"It was a very solid start for the Demon Deacons today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We shot 15-under on the front and after a slow start on the back, we made six birdies on the last three to make us 18-under. This is a very explosive team and I am happy with our start."
All five Demon Deacons in the lineup shot under par during the first round. Womble led the way with his 8-under round of 64, collecting six birdies and an eagle during a bogey-free round. He owns the individual lead by two shots.
Freshman Cameron Young had his best round of the spring, posting a 4-under round of 68 and is T-8th after the first round. A pair of Deacs, sophomore Will Zalatoris and freshman Kyle Sterbinsky, had 3-under rounds of 69 on Friday and are T-21st. Wake Forest didn't have to count a first-round 70 by sophomore Paul McBride.
The Schenkel Invitational will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday in Statesboro.
