STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team heads into the final round of the 2016 Schenkel Invitational in contention for its fourth title of the year. The Demon Deacons shot 4-under during Saturday's play at Forest Heights Country Club and trail co-leaders Auburn and Georgia State by one shot with 18 holes to play.
The Demon Deacons, who held the 18-hole lead, are at 22-under through 36 holes of the tournament that features nine top-50 teams. They are tied with Vanderbilt, one shot behind Auburn and Georgia State at 23-under.
"We had a slow start today, which is what happens sometimes after a really good round," said head coach Jerry Haas. "It will take a really solid group effort tomorrow to be champs. I am glad we are in the last group and that is why it is important to play well the first two rounds to get into that position. It has been a great job so far by Cameron and Davis."
Wake Forest has a pair of players in the individual top five. Davis Womble is tied for second at 10-under after a second-round 70. Cameron Young climbed into fourth place at 9-under after a bogey-free 5-under round of 67 on Saturday.
Paul McBride is T-38th at 1-under after a second round 73 and is tied with teammate Will Zalatoris, who shot 74 on Saturday. Kyle Sterbinsky is at even par for the tournament after a second round 75.
The Schenkel Invitational will conclude Sunday in Statesboro.
