STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team posted a second place finish at the 2016 Schenkel Invitational as play concluded Sunday at Forest Heights Country Club. The Demon Deacons finished 31-under to earn runner-up honors behind Vanderbilt at an event that featured nine top-50 teams.
Wake Forest finished in the top three for the seventh time in eight events this season. The Demon Deacons were led by freshman Cameron Young who finished third individually at 12-under.
"We played very clean golf today as we only had five bogeys among our counting scores," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We played solid, not great, but if it wasn't for one hot team we would have won. To shoot 31-under par is excellent golf and we are starting to trend in the right direction. Except for one event, it has been really solid golf all year long by the Demon Deacons."
Young had a 3-under round of 69 to finish 12-under, one shot off the individual lead. Joining him in the top 10 was Davis Womble, who had a 2-over 74 on Sunday to finish T-10th at 8-under.
Will Zalatoris tied Young for the low round of the day for the Deacs, posting a 69 to finish T-25th at 4-under. Paul McBride had a bogey-free round of 70 on Sunday to finish T-34th at 3-under. Kyle Sterbinsky finished T-42nd at 1-under after a round of 73 on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons return to action April 3-5 with the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
