GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis freshman Anna Ulyashchenko has been named the ACC Co-Female Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday. She shares the award with Miami's Stephanie Wagner.
The honor is the second of its kind for a Demon Deacon this season. Junior Kimmy Guerin earned the accolade on Feb. 16. Ulyashchenko is the first Wake Forest freshman to garner the plaudit since Ashlee Davis in 2004.
Ulyashchenko helped guide the Deacons to wins over No. 38 Notre Dame, No. 10 Virginia and East Carolina last week.
After the Demon Deacons dropped the doubles point against the Fighting Irish on the road last Friday, the rookie topped Allison Miller in straight sets at No. 3 singles to help the Deacs rally for a 4-3 win. The victory was their first over the Irish in nine meetings since 2004 and was their first at Notre Dame since 1997.
On Sunday, Ulyashchenko and Guerin paired up to defeat 25th-ranked Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley of Virginia at No. 1 doubles to help secure the match's first point. With the match later knotted at three in singles play, Ulyashchenko outlasted No. 64 Skylar Morton in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision to propel the Deacs to victory.
The wins in both singles and doubles against the Cavaliers were the first triumphs against ranked opponents of the Brooklyn, N.Y. native's career. The team victory for the Deacons was their first against Virginia since 2008 and was their first over a top-10 foe since 2007.
To conclude a 5-1 weekend in singles and doubles, Ulyashchenko won at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles against East Carolina as part of a 6-1 win for Wake Forest. On the 2015-16 season, she is now 19-10 in singles and 17-10 in doubles.
Ranked No. 14, their highest team ranking since 2007, the Demon Deacons will wrap up a four-match homestand this week by hosting Pittsburgh on Friday and 10th-ranked Duke on Saturday. Both matches are slated for noon starts.
