CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The No. 13 Wake Forest men's tennis team won its eighth-consecutive match on Friday afternoon, blanking 64th-ranked Miami, 7-0, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The match was the Demon Deacons' first on the road since Feb. 13.
The Deacons' eight-match shutout steak sets a school record. They also improved to 21-4 overall and 5-1 in the ACC in 2016. Against ranked teams, the Deacs are 12-4.
Romain Bogaerts and Dennis Uspensky gave Wake Forest the start it wanted, dispatching the Hurricanes' Jesse Flores and Kevin Bondar, 6-3, at No. 3. doubles. Miami responded, however, with a 6-3 upset win by Max Andrews and Bernard Tefel over No. 12 Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim at No. 1.
To decide the match's first point, the 48th-ranked duo of Petros Chrysochos and Jon Ho won a 7-5 decision in the second position.
With a 1-0 lead in hand, Chrysochos improved to 11-0 at the No. 2 singles spot by quickly defeating Andrews, 6-2, 6-4. Shortly after, the No. 16-ranked Mansouri made it 3-0, Demon Deacons, by completing a 6-4, 6-3 victory over 38th-ranked Piotr Lomacki in the top flight.
Mansouri is 6-1 in dual-match singles play against nationally ranked competition.
To secure the team win, Ho edged Flores in a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-3, 7-6 triumph. Bogaerts then made it 5-0 by outlasting Fermin Calvo in three sets at No. 4 for the 97th singles win of his collegiate career.
After having later starts, No. 5 and No. 6 singles had their matches delayed due to inclement weather. When the players returned to their courts, Seraphim finished a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 and Uspensky capped the shutout with a straight-set win at No. 5.
Seraphim leads the Deacons in 2015-16 with 28 singles victories after notching his eighth straight-set win in a row on Friday.
Wake Forest resumes play on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against No. 20 Florida State and wraps up a four-match road swing next week with trips to Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
