WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Coming off the ACC regular-season and Atlantic Division titles in 2015, Wake Forest men's soccer announced its 2016 ACC schedule Wednesday and is in search of back-to-back ACC titles for the first time in program history after going 6-0-2 in conference play last season.
Overall, Wake Forest's 2016 conference opponents went 90-47-26 overall in 2015. In 2016, the Demon Deacons will take on three of the top four finishers from the Coastal Division.
Wake Forest's first game in conference play will come on Sept. 10 against Virginia inside the friendly confines of Spry Stadium. The Deacs other three home games in conference play will come on Sept. 24 against NC State, on Oct. 15 against Louisville and on Oct. 22 against Boston College.
During the season, Wake Forest's road games consist of a trip to in-state rival Duke on Sept. 16 before the final three ACC road games will come against teams that reached at least the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in Clemson (Sept. 30), Notre Dame (Oct. 8) and Syracuse (Oct. 28).
Last season, the Demon Deacons completed just the third undefeated ACC season in program history by going 6-0-2 to earn the ACC's Atlantic Division and regular-season titles. During the year, the Deacs battled six of the eight teams it will see in 2016, beating national semifinalist Syracuse 3-1 on Sept. 19, Boston College 5-0 on Oct. 2, Notre Dame 2-1 on Oct. 23 and Louisville 4-2 on Oct. 30. Wake Forest fought to ties against national finalist Clemson (1-1 on Sept. 26) and NC State (0-0 on Oct. 9). In the ACC Tournament, the Deacs again beat Louisville 2-1 in overtime before falling 1-0 to Notre Dame in the semifinals.
The Demon Deacons' complete schedule with nonconference opponents will be announced at a later date. Overall, Wake Forest went 17-3-2 last season, which tied for the fourth-most wins in program history to date and was the most in a season since winning 17 games in 2009.
Wake Forest will close out its 2016 spring slate on Saturday, April 16, at home against VCU. The 7 p.m. game is the highlight event of Springfest, which includes a free clinic on Friday at Spry Stadium before a pregame fair with the chance to interact with current Demon Deacons on Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. Throughout Saturday at Spry Stadium, fans will have the chance to bid on signed memorabilia from former Demon Deacon players that are now playing in the pros, as well as a signed FC Barcelona jersey the Deacs had signed during its trip to Spain in March. Signatures on the Barcelona jersey include that of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez and many, many more.
