UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team finished second at the 2016 ACC Championship as play concluded Sunday at the Old North State Club. The Demon Deacons shot 3-under during the final round to finish the championship at 14-under, securing their best finish at the event since 2004.

Wake Forest finished 11 shots behind champion Clemson, who shot 25-under, and nine shots ahead of third-place Florida State (5-under). Those were the only three schools to shoot under par at this year's event.

The Demon Deacons were led by a pair of top-10 finishers as Davis Womble finished T-4th and Paul McBride finished T-9th.

"Obviously we came here to win, not finish second, but there were a lot of positives this week," said head coach Jerry Haas. "There are a lot of years where shooting under par here is what you need to win. My hat is off to Clemson, they played very well this week. They are an old team and we are a young team. We had two freshmen and two sophomores out there. They were led by Davis (Womble), who played very well. He has been a great senior for us. We have a lot of golf still to play. We want to go to regionals and win there and make some noise at the NCAA and make this one of the best years we have had in a while."

Womble, who held the second round lead at 7-under, shot an even par round of 72 on Sunday. His fourth-place finish was the senior's career-best finish at the ACC Championship. McBride also shot an even par round of 72, finishing the tournament at 3-under.

The best round of the day for the Deacs was carded by Will Zalatoris, who shot a 2-under round of 70. He finished the tournament at 2-over, tied for 25th place. Kyle Sterbinsky finished the tournament at 2-under after a final round 71. He finished T-13th in the ACC Championship debut. Cameron Young rounded out the Demon Deacon lineup, shooting a final round 78 on Sunday.

The Demon Deacons will return to action with the NCAA Regionals, held at six sites around the nation, May 16-18. The regional selections will be made on May 5, at 9:30 a.m. on Golf Channel.
