MARANA, Ariz. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Monday at the NCAA Tucson Regional with the first round at The Gallery Club. The Demon Deacons overcame a slow start to shoot a 2-under round of 286.
The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, held May 27-June 1 in Eugene, Ore. Top-ranked Stanford holds the 18-hole lead after shooting 14-under. UAB is second at 5-under, followed by Oregon (3-under) and Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons got off to a slow start, as the four scoring players shot 3-over during the front nine before shooting 5-under on the back nine. The late charge was highlighted by a combined five birdies and an eagle over the final three holes.
"It always helps to have a very good finish on the last three holes," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We haven't played as a team since the ACC Championship and we obviously had a slow start. It was an extremely good finish to allow us to salvage the day. We have 36 more holes to go and we just need to keep playing like we did at the finish today."
Paul McBride headlined the opening day for the Deacs with a first round 67 and is tied for second on the individual leaderboard at 5-under. He carded six birdies to just one bogey during Monday's round.
Kyle Sterbinsky is T-15th after shooting a 1-under 71 during the opening round. Davis Womble shot an even par 72 and is T-23rd.
Will Zalatoris used a strong finish to shoot a 4-over round of 76. After shooting 8-over for the first six holes, he shot 4-under the rest of the day, including an eagle on No. 16 and a birdie on No. 17. Cameron Young rounded out the Deacon lineup with a 7-over round of 79.
The NCAA Tucson Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at The Gallery Club.
