GREENSBORO, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference champion Wake Forest men's tennis team picked up five conference accolades, the ACC announced on Thursday when it released its 2016 All-ACC Teams and individual honors.
Skander Mansouri, Petros Chrysochos and Romain Bogaerts each earned All-ACC accolades. In addition, Chrysochos was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, while head coach Tony Bresky received the ACC Coach of the Year award. Mansouri was named to the conference's first team, while Chrysochos and Bogaerts were selected to the second and third teams, respectively.
The All-ACC teams and individual season honors were selected by a vote of the league's 13 head coaches.
Mansouri has been a staple atop of the Deacons' lineup as a sophomore this season, going 13-6 at the No. 1 position. After a breakout fall season that included an ITA Carolina Regional singles title, he has downed 10 ranked singles foes in dual-match play, including four in the top 25. He currently owns the highest national ranking of his career at No. 13 and has 30 total wins in 2015-16.
In addition to being slotted 13th nationally in singles, Mansouri has the same ranking in doubles with partner Christian Seraphim. The duo has topped nine ranked opponents on the spring, four of which were ranked 15th or higher.
Chrysochos, a mid-year addition to the Deacs, is the fourth Demon Deacon to win league rookie of the year honors and is the second in a row after Noah Rubin earned the plaudit last season. This year, the second team all-league honoree reached as high as No. 19 in the national singles rankings after going 17-0 at the No. 2 singles spot in the regular season, including a 10-0 mark in ACC play. He will enter the NCAA Tournament 9-1 against ranked opponents.
In addition to his singles success, Chrysochos climbed to No. 48 in doubles with Jon Ho. The pairing played primarily at the No. 2 position and took down four ranked opponents.
Bogaerts earned the fourth all-conference nod of his career. The two-time All-American has gone 15-3 at No. 4 singles with five wins over ranked foes this spring. He clinched 4-3 wins over No. 1 North Carolina—Wake Forest's first-ever win against a top-ranked team—and Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals with third-set tiebreaker triumphs. Bogaerts also secured the team's Senior Day victory over Duke with the 100th singles win of his career. He became the seventh Deacon to accomplish that feat.
In doubles, Bogaerts is 19-5 in dual-match play with Dennis Uspensky, including 13-3 at No. 3. The tandem won all three of their ACC Tournament matches.
Bresky, who has led the Demon Deacons to their first-ever conference title, their highest-ever overall (29) and conference (10) win totals and their highest-ever national ranking (No. 5) in his fifth season with the team, earned ACC Coach of the Year for the second time after also taking it home in 2013. The honor is the third of its kind in school history—Jim Leighton won it in 1981.
With the Deacs' ACC Tournament quarterfinal win over Notre Dame, Bresky reached the 100-win plateau with Wake Forest. His current record with the program is 102-51. He also led the Demon Deacons to their first-ever ITA National Indoor Team Championships appearance.
Wake Forest will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 13. The complete NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Tuesday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m. in a live-streaming selection show on NCAA.com.
