TULSA, Okla. – The Wake Forest men's tennis team's season came to an end on Friday evening with a 4-0 loss to No. 11 Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament round of 16 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The Demon Deacons finished 2016 with a 31-6 record, giving them their winningest season in program history. The third-round showing in the national tournament was their fourth.
"Congrats to Oklahoma—they totally outplayed us," said Wake Forest head coach Tony Bresky. "The scoreboard says it wasn't close. They played great. They're obviously an experienced and tough team."
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point, the Sooners won the first set on all six courts and closed out the match by taking the first three matches to finish.
Playing together for the first time since the ACC Tournament championship, Romain Bogaerts and Dennis Uspensky gave the Deacons a quick edge in doubles with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot. Oklahoma, however, nullified that with a 6-2 win by No. 24 Axel Alvarez Llamas and Andrew Harris over No. 13 Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim at No. 1.
Using a break to get in front, 5-3, at No. 2, Alex Ghilea and Spencer Papa clinched the doubles point for the Sooners. Oklahoma, the 2015 NCAA runner up, capitalized on its momentum and carried it over into singles.
The 61st-ranked Ghilea finished first, defeating Bogaerts, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. The 82nd-ranked Papa then topped Jon Ho in straight sets at No. 3 to put the Sooners a point away from victory.
No. 97 Andrew Harris, who didn't play singles in the teams' previous two 2016 meetings—both Wake Forest wins—clinched the result by upending Mansouri, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1.
The matches at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 did not finish.
The 2016 season was an eventful one for the Deacs. The team won its first-ever ACC title, made the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time and downed six opponents ranked sixth or higher after having five top-10 wins since 2000 entering the year.
The Deacons also defeated a No. 1-ranked team for the first time ever when they took down North Carolina on the road in March. They repeated the feat in the conference championship match against Virginia.
Wake Forest's senior class of Bogaerts, Ho, Sam Bloom, Anthony Delcore and Brendan Henry finished with a 90-37 record, making it the winningest class in school history.
