TULSA, Okla. --
Wake Forest women's tennis junior Kimmy Guerin will compete in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

The 64th-ranked Guerin will take on Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy in the first round of the 64-player tournament at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The Weston, Conn. native was a Second Team All-ACC honoree and enters the event with 21-17 singles mark that includes a 15-11 ledger at the No. 1 dual-match position and eight wins over ranked opponents. Guerin helped lead the Deacs to their first 9-0 start in program history by winning her first nine singles matches of the spring. She also climbed to a career-best No. 44 in the national singles rankings in 2016.

McCarthy, also a second team all-conference selection, is ranked 55th nationally in singles, but has been as high as 21st. The Duke rookie has compiled a singles record of 24-12, with six victories coming against ranked foes. She played primarily at the No. 2 spot for the Blue Devils, going 8-8 at the position.

The winner of the match between Guerin and McCarthy will play either No. 102 Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach State or 13th-ranked Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State in the second round.

Guerin is the first Demon Deacon to qualify for the national singles tournament since Martina Pavelec in 2011. Pavelec dropped a three-set contest to Michigan's Denise Muresan in the first round. Also that year, Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert reached the second round of the national doubles tournament.

Wake Forest's team season ended with a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to No. 40 Baylor on May 13. The Deacs finished 19-10, racking up their highest win total since 2002 and reaching the national tournament for the first time since 2009.
