TULSA, Okla. – Skander Mansouri and Petros Chrysochos of the Wake Forest men's tennis team won their second-round matches at the NCAA Singles Championships and Mansouri and Christian Seraphim teamed up to win in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. on Thursday.
Chrysochos began the day with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3) victory over No. 53 Alfredo Perez of Florida. Mansouri then capped the Deacons' singles competition for the day by taking down No. 24 Alex Rybakov of TCU, 7-6 (4), 6-4. The wins gave the Deacs two players in the NCAA Singles round of 16 for the first time ever.
With his triumph, Chrysochos became the seventh singles All-American in program history. Mansouri became the sixth Demon Deacon singles All-American by earning a top-16 seed in the tournament.
Following his win in singles, Mansouri paired with Seraphim to down No. 19 Giammarco Micolani and Mike Redlicki, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the first round of the 32-team doubles draw.
In his first set, Chrysochos overcame a 40-15 deficit in the 11th game to record a late service break of Perez before holding on for a 7-5 victory. After dropping the second set, the ACC Freshman of the Year was unable to finish off the SEC Co-Freshman of the Year after going up a break to take a 5-3 lead in the third frame, but jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker en route to a 7-3 win.
Mansouri broke Big 12 Freshman of the Year Rybakov in the match's first game, but Rybakov answered with a break of his own that made it 3-3. Six-straight holds led to a tiebreaker in which Mansouri never trailed on the way to a 7-4 win. The players played to a 4-4 tie in the second set before the Deacs' team MVP held serve and broke Rybacki to claim the match.
In doubles, Mansouri and Seraphim matched Micolani and Redlicki game for game in the opener before racing out to a 5-2 advantage in the tiebreaker, leading to a 7-4 victory. Up 4-3 in the second set, Seraphim sealed the first service break of the match with a return that was too strong for Redlicki to keep in play. Mansouri then clinched the victory in the next game, capping the match with an ace.
Play in Tulsa continues on Friday with the round of 16 in both singles and doubles.
In singles, Mansouri will face sixth-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA at 11 a.m. ET, while Chrysochos will play No. 16 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois at 12:30 p.m. ET. Mansouri and Seraphim will take on No. 6 Jordan Daigle and Boris Arias of LSU in a match slated for a 3:30 p.m. ET start.
