TULSA, Okla. – Three Wake Forest men's tennis players advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Championships with victories on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Freshman Petros Chrysochos moved on to the fourth round of the singles draw, while the duo of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim reached the third round in doubles.
Chrysochos downed 16th-ranked Jared Hiltzik of Illinois, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the singles round of 16. Mansouri dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to sixth-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA in singles, but later teamed up with Seraphim to dispatch No. 6 Jordan Daigle and Boris Arias of LSU, 6-4, 6-4, in doubles.
With the victory, Mansouri and Seraphim became the first Deacons since 2010 to earn All-American status in doubles. Mansouri became the third player in program history to garner All-American accolades in both singles and doubles, joining Todd Paul in 2007 and Cory Parr in 2009.
The singles win for Chrysochos made him the second Demon Deacon to reach the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Singles Championship. Noah Rubin reached the championship match last season.
After dropping his first set, Chrysochos faced a 4-1 deficit in the second set but turned the tables on Hiltzik by winning nine of the next 10 games, including the final five of the second frame. Hiltzik cut the Wake Forest freshman's third-set advantage to 4-3, but Chrysochos closed out the win with a hold and a break.
In his rookie campaign, Chrysochos is 26-4 with a 13-1 mark against ranked opponents and a 10-2 ledger in three-set contests. He will face top-seeded Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State in the quarterfinal round at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
In his singles match, Mansouri fell in straight sets to McDonald, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year, after falling behind by a break early in each set. The native of Tunis, Tunisia finished the year 33-11 in singles, including 17-10 against ranked competition. His 33 singles wins slot him fifth in a single season in school history.
Later in the day, Mansouri and Seraphim had very similar first and second sets to reach the doubles quarterfinals. In the opener, the Deacon duo broke Arias in the first game and held serve five times to win, 6-4. The Deacs then kicked off the second set with a break of Daigle and again held five times to secure the triumph.
Wake Forest's top pairing is now 24-14 in 2015-16 with 12 wins against ranked tandems. So far in their first two seasons, the sophomores are 45-22 together with 21 ranked victories. In the quartfinals, Mansouri and Seraphim will take on Arthur Rinderknech and Jackson Withrow of Texas A&M at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.
