TULSA, Okla. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team's run at the NCAA Individual Championships came to an end on Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Freshman Petros Chrysochos fell in the singles quarterfinal round after the tandem of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim did the same in doubles.
Chrysochos dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State in singles action. The 27th-ranked Deacon rookie was unable to recover after falling behind by a break midway through the first set. He finished his All-American freshman campaign with a 26-5 singles mark that included a 13-2 record against ranked opponents.
The ACC Freshman of the Year and ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year defeated No. 12 Julian Lenz of Baylor, No. 53 Alfredo Perez of Florida and No. 16 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois in the first three rounds of the tournament, respectively. He was the second Deacon to ever reach the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Singles draw.
No. 13-ranked Mansouri and Seraphim used a pair of breaks to take a 4-1 first-set lead en route to a 6-3 win. However, the No. 8-ranked Jackson Withrow and Arthur Rinderknech of Texas A&M flipped the script in the second frame to nab a 6-3 victory of their own. In the match tiebreaker, the Deacs erased a 5-0 deficit to knot the score at six, but the Aggies claimed the final four points to win, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6), and advance to the semifinal round.
The sophomore pairing from Wake Forest went 24-14 in 2015-16 with 12 wins against ranked tandems. They became the school's sixth-ever All-American duo by knocking off No. 19 Mike Redlicki and Giammarco Micolani of Arkansas in the first round and sixth-ranked Jordan Daigle and Boris Aria of LSU in the second round.
The appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championships was the second from Mansouri and Seraphim, matching a school record. They reached the round of 16 last year before this year's quarterfinal run. In two seasons, they are 45-23 together with 21 ranked victories.
The 2016 season marked the first time two Demon Deacons reached the NCAA Singles round of 16 and the second time two Deacs became singles All-Americans. Mansouri joined Todd Paul in 2007 and Cory Parr in 2009 as the only Wake Forest players to achieve All-American status in both singles and doubles.
All-time the Deacs are now 14-16 in singles and 15-8 in doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships.
As a team, Wake Forest finished the season at No. 8 in the final national rankings after making its fourth appearance in the NCAA round of 16. The Demon Deacons set a program record for wins by going 31-6 and won their first-ever ACC title with a 4-3 championship win over eventual national champion Virginia.
