TUCSON, Ariz. – Wake Forest men's tennis volunteer assistant coach Alex Emery was named the assistant men's tennis coach at the University of Arizona on Tuesday. Emery, who spent two seasons with the Demon Deacons, will join Wildcat head coach Clancy Shields for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
"Congratulations to Alex on his great opportunity at the University of Arizona," said Deacon head coach Tony Bresky. "Alex did an outstanding job with our program and the entire team and I will miss him. Arizona is getting a great coach and even better person."
Over the last two seasons, the Deacons have gone 55-14, including 19-5 in the ACC, and reached the NCAA Tournament round of 16 in both years. In 2016, the Deacs had a program-record 31 wins, won their first-ever conference title and finished with their highest-ever final ranking at No. 8.
With Emery on the Deacs' staff, Wake Forest had five All-Americans and five all-conference honorees. Additionally, Noah Rubin won the 2015 ACC Player of the Year award and both he and Petros Chrysochos earned ACC Freshman of the Year plaudits.
Before his stint in Winston-Salem, Emery spent one season as the volunteer assistant coach at Drake. He helped the Bulldogs to Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as a top-30 national ranking. He also coached three student-athletes to the NCAA Individual Championships appearances.
A native of Ozark, Ala., Emery played his collegiate tennis at UAB, where he was ranked in the top 30 in doubles during his junior and senior seasons. He led Conference USA with 31 wins singles during his freshman season. Emery graduated from UAB in 2011 with a degree in psychology.
